Embracing Spring and Exploring What Truly Matters

Hello Again Igniters!

As we step into the blossoming days of spring, the days grow longer and the promise of warmer weather beckons, a sense of possibility hangs heavy in the air. Spring is often used as a potent metaphor for the potential, growth and transformation that resides within each of us. In this issue of the Insight Igniter, I explore a powerful coaching question that serves as a springboard for self-discovery. By tapping into the transformative energy of spring, we focus that energy on renewal and growth, reflecting on the significance we place on our experiences, goals, and relationships.

The Insight Igniter coaching question for April 22, 2024:

“What is important about this to you?”

This deceptively simple question shifts the focus from the situation itself to your internal world, inviting reflection, navigating complexity, and informing the reasons behind our actions.

Inviting Reflection

Reflecting on this question encourages you to step back and gain a broader perspective. It invites you to consider the bigger picture and evaluate whether your current pursuits align with your true priorities. By clarifying what's truly important, you can make more informed decisions and allocate your time and energy more effectively.

Navigating Complexity

Life often presents us with complex challenges and competing priorities. By asking ourselves what's important about a particular situation, we can untangle the complexities and focus on what truly resonates with our hearts and minds. This clarity empowers us to navigate challenges more effectively.

Informing Action

By focusing on "importance," we can peel back the layers and uncover the fundamental reasons behind our own or someone's thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. As we start to identify and understand what truly matters, we take full ownership of the situation, allowing us to make choices with a clear mind.

In my coaching practice I have used variations of this question to support clients navigate:

  • Goal Setting: When someone is struggling to define or commit to a goal, "What's important about achieving this goal to you? Or " What significance do you attach to this effort?

  • Decision Making: Faced with a difficult choice? Challenge client with "What's important about each option to you?"

  • Overcoming Obstacles: Are they stuck in a rut? Pose the question "What's important about overcoming this challenge to you?"

I close this issue with an invitation, whether you're setting intentions for the week ahead, reflecting on recent experiences, or contemplating future aspirations, allow yourself to explore what's truly important to you. "What is important about this to you?" is an insightful coaching question as it invites reflection, simplifies complexity, and informs action to enable and facilitate growth.
