Insight Igniter Question - “What Does Good Look Like?”
This seemingly simple inquiry carries profound significance in my approach to coaching. Let us probe into why…
Vision Guides Action
At the heart of every coaching journey lies a desire for clarity. When individuals articulate what "good" looks like they are painting a vivid picture of success. This picture becomes the North Star linking future conversations as we collaborate to align our efforts and actions to the client’s vision of “good”. “What good looks like” is applicable to the dynamics of the coaching relationship – defining our rules on how we will ensure a healthy partnership.
A great example of vision guiding action is JFK’s address to congress on May 25, 1961. The video is here and I encourage you to watch it. Pay attention to the clarity of detail the former President goes into in defining his vision for space exploration. This is what good looks like!
There are inherent pitfalls in not establishing a clear picture of “good”. Without a vison of what constitutes “good” – ambiguity exists. Ambiguity undermines the effectiveness of the coaching relationship by introducing tension, diminishing trust and wastes energy as the coach and client struggle to understand the goal.
In my coaching practice, clarity of “good” becomes the cornerstone for setting meaningful goals and setting the trajectory for client success.
Alignment with Values
What does “good” look like? Can be a prompting question encouraging a client to go deeper into self-discovery exploring values, core beliefs, and their relationship to “good”. As clients increase their self-awareness and gain insight into what truly matters, they can release values that limit the realization of “good” and leverage others. I believe the alignment and prioritization of client values fosters a sense of fulfillment in realizing success that is grounded in integrity and authenticity.
Continuous Improvement Fuels Growth
When individuals have a clear picture of "good", they can better identify gaps and obstacles hindering progress and identify specific criteria for measuring success. “What good looks like” transforms abstract aspirations into tangible milestones, facilitating a clear assessment of growth and achievement. This is where I encourage clients to embrace a growth mindset. “Good” is relative and I look to instill a commitment to ongoing refinement and development, propelling clients toward ever-higher standards of excellence!
As you contemplate this question, remember "good" is not a static destination, but rather a journey of growth and development. Your definition of "good" is uniquely yours, shaped by your experiences, values, and aspirations. Embrace the opportunity to explore, clarify, and refine your understanding of what “good” means to you.
Best,
Stefan
