Defining Discipline - Finding Your Unique Approach
Hello Igniters!
I trust that this issue of the Insight Igniter finds you well. To my American friends, I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving with friends and family. I have always appreciated US Thanksgiving as it brings me 5 days of football that includes college rivalry games like Michigan vs Ohio State, Georgia vs Georgia State and Auburn vs Alabama – and a reason to chef up an epic spread. Sports, and more specifically football, I have found make for an interesting parallel in coachable moments in business. Tune into a half-time or post-game interview with a losing head coach you will likely hear something along the lines of “We need to be more disciplined…”
The Insight Igniter coaching question for December 2nd, 2024:
“What does discipline mean to you?”
Often framed as the backbone of success, it can also be a tool for creating freedom, personal mastery and alignment with values. As we move closer to 2025, I will be building on the concept of discipline, so let’s explore your unique definition of discipline and how it shapes your approach goals, challenges, and daily choices.
Why It Matters
Discipline isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept. Athletes don’t simply walk onto the field and hope for a win, they adhere to grueling training camps, hours of film study, and strict fitness regimens. Where others may find discipline in military precision, an unyielding schedule that create habits that lead to growth; or you may say it’s about setting boundaries to prioritize what’s essential to a life fully lived. Defining your version of discipline creates clarity of purpose and alignment of actions that bridge the space between intention and results.
Space for Reflection
This week as you consider what discipline means to you, reflect on your current practice:
Do I see discipline as a restriction, rather than a liberating force?
How do my values shape my commitment to discipline?
Does your current understanding of discipline enable you to master the mundane?
Do I feel a sharpened sense of focus when faced with making decisions?
How does your understanding of discipline change in times of success vs failure?
Whether we are chasing career milestones, personal fulfillment, or simply a better version of ourselves, discipline is the key to unlocking our potential and turning our dreams into achievements.
I will wrap up this issue of the Insight Igniter with words of inspiration from legendary football coach Vince Lombardi "Discipline and hard work are a price you must pay to achieve any goal. Once you pay that price, you can enjoy the fruits of your efforts."
Until next time – Stay Ignited!
Best,
Stef
